The row of buildings is the officer's quarters, which were built on magnetic north. The outlines of the foundations are the first infantryman's quarters, which were built to true north. In the mid-to-late 19th century this fort was responsible for maintaining safety of the mail and passengers along the trail.

Day 195: Meet the Neighbors

We stopped off on the side of the road to take some shots of the sheep...and happened to park right in front of the mailbox of Art. He was kind enough to invite us in to take some pictures of his "pets". Cows, calves, sheep, geese, turkeys...there was a lot going on!
Day 189: Twilight Tour of Cliff Palace
Location: Mesa Verde National Park, Cliff Palace
Cliff Palace is the largest cliff dwelling in the United States if is over 200 ft wide, but some 150 rooms.
This is a picture of our Ranger guide, David Night Eagle, a Lakota who also makes flutes. He announced our presence to the ancestors at the begging and thanked them for their hospitality at end of the tour with a song...it was really very cool.
Day 186: Sand Canyon/ Rock Creek Trail
Location: Canyon of the Ancients, Sand Canyon, Cortez, CO
We didn't see any pueblos on this hike, but our eyes are those of the novice, so we might have walked right by.
Day 184: Hovenweep
Location: Hovenweep National Monument
We camped here for one not...not fully realizing that it would be so much hotter than Cortez. Whoops!
Day 182: Behind the scenes tour!
Location: Ansazi Hertigage Center. Delores, CO.
We went behind the "Do Not Enter - Employees Only" doors at this BLM museum and research center. The center was created in the 80's as part of a massive effort to conserve artifacts 126 pueblo and ranch town sites before they were flooded for a reservoir. It was a great tour.
This is a pic of bracelets made of clam shells...the shells were traded into the area. They are believed to have been brought from the Gulf Coast of Texas.
Day 179: Arches
Location: Arches National Park. Double Arch in Windows section.
One of the busiest in the National Parks system. It was cool, but perhaps a little bit overhyped?
Day 177: Canyon of the Ancients
Location: Sand Canyon Trail, Canyon of the Ancients.
There are about 1,400 documented ruins on this trail.
Day 175: Country Roads
Location: Canyon of the Ancients National Monument, Colorado
Visiting this monument requires driving for a few hours on backroads; some with views similar to the painted desert, others which display the full power of irrigation! Wendy forgot her good camera, so we only captured a small part of what we saw.
Day 178: Work Day
