Below the Rim: A mile-by-mile view of the Grand Canyon

Some friends we know and respect told us the Grand Canyon is "just a big hole in the ground." Well, now that we've been, we beg to differ!

We took turns hiking down the canyon (no dogs below the rim!)  and were glad we did. Wendy did a day hike (in lovely sunny weather) and went 5 miles down to Indian Gardens.  Curt scored a night at Phantom Ranch (!) and went all the way to the Colorado River (and hiked back up in rain & sleet!).

Curt got his space due to someone's cancellation. He met lots of people who did the same, some putting their names on a waiting list just the day before their descent.  Worth trying! If you do happen to stay at Phantom Ranch, you don't need to pack much. They provide sheets, blankets, towels, soap, and food, if you order in advance.  They even have a pay phone and take credit cards!

If you haven't yet been to the Canyon or would like to relive the experience, here's the view, shot mile by mile on the Bright Angel Trail.  We try to note the different rock formations along the way...but don't quote us on it.   We've only had 90 minutes of geology training at a Ranger talk!
